CONFIRMATION

 Youth Confirmation

Confirmation is one of the three Sacraments of Initiation within the Catholic Church. When a person is confirmed, the grace given at Baptism is completed by the gifts of the Holy Spirit. This completion prepares the person to actively participate as a Catholic (both during Mass and within society).  Confirmation is the beginning of making your faith journey your own.

It is important to remember that “Confirmation imprints a spiritual mark or indelible character on the Christian Soul; for this reason, one can receive this sacrament only once in their life” (CCC1317). This year, registration for Confirmation will be open from September-December 2023 and classes will begin in January 2024.

Requirements:

  • Be between 12-17 years old

  • Registration, Baptism, and First Communion Certificates turned in by December 15, 2023

  • Sponsor form filled out and returned by March 15, 2024

  • A person should not miss more than three sessions without making up the material

  • Attend the Confirmation retreat in September 2024.

Guidelines for sponsors (according to the Archdiocese of Seattle):

The sponsor is to take care that the person to be confirmed behaves as a true witness of Christ and faithfully fulfills the obligations that come with the sacrament

  • Be designated by the one who is to receive Confirmation, by his or her parents or the person who takes their place, or, in their absence, by the pastor or minister of the sacrament, and have the aptitude and intention of fulfilling this function.

  • Have completed the sixteenth year of age, unless the pastor or minister of the sacrament has granted an exception for a just cause.

  • Be a Catholic who has been confirmed and has already received the most holy sacrament of the Eucharist and who leads a life of faith in keeping with the function to be taken on.

  • Not be bound by any canonical penalty legitimately imposed or declared.

  • Not be the father or mother of the one who is to receive the sacrament.

The sponsor should be a practicing Catholic:

  • Attending Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation

  • Going to Confession at least once a year

  • Receiving Communion at least once during the Easter season

  • Observing the days of fasting

  • Giving support to the Church
